This unit provides the fundamental knowledge in international business. This unit of study aims to understand how contemporary businesses operate in an international environment. The unit covers economic and business theories and frameworks explaining foreign direct investment and trade and country and firm level factors that impact global strategy. Topics examined are relevant to both the environment (economic, political, legal, and cultural) and competitive strategy (international expansion strategy, entry mode, cross-border strategic alliances) of international business. The unit discusses both long-standing challenges facing international businesses and new ones posed by a changing geopolitical context.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an effective understanding of how social, economic, geographical, institutional and cultural factors shape the environment in in which international business make trade and investment decisions;
2. Apply specialised business and economic concepts to analyse major factors and issues affecting the development of international business;
3. Analyse and evaluate advanced knowledge of how businesses operate in an international context, particularly with respect to trade and investment decisions; and
4. Identify, collect, classify, evaluate, and utilise real world information to prepare an international business plan for an organisation.
