This unit introduces students to physiotherapy management in disorders of the human spine following a patient-centred approach. Students will study the pathophysiology and orthopaedic management of common spinal disorders. Students will continue to develop the clinical reasoning and practical skills required for assessment and intervention.
1. Integrate and apply comprehensive knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, biomechanics, and pathophysiology to critically inform the assessment and management of conditions affecting the spine, trunk, pelvis and head;
2. Evaluate the multidimensional nature of pain, including persistent pain, and apply the biopsychosocial model to critically assess, interpret and manage pain in physiotherapy practice;
3. Design and conduct safe, effective, and adaptable clinical assessments using hypothetico-deductive reasoning to independently problem-solve and support diagnosis, differential diagnosis and management planning;
4. Formulate, demonstrate and justify manual and exercise-based interventions through treatment planning, prioritisation of clinical problems, critical appraisal of evidence, outcome evaluation and integration of interprofessional perspectives; and
5. Critically reflect on cultural safety, communication practices, and personal bias in physiotherapy, with a focus on respectful and responsive practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Learning outcomes
