This unit introduces students to physiotherapy management in disorders of the human spine following a patient-centred approach. Students will study the pathophysiology and orthopaedic management of common spinal disorders. Students will continue to develop the clinical reasoning and practical skills required for assessment and intervention.
This unit is co-taught with unit 6453 Musculoskeletal Interventions 2 PG.
1. Apply broad and coherent knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, biomechanics, and pathophysiology to inform the assessment and management of conditions affecting the spine, trunk, pelvis, and head, demonstrating well-developed understanding of core principles;
2. Analyse the multidimensional nature of pain, including persistent pain, and apply the biopsychosocial model to interpret clinical scenarios and justify pain management strategies in physiotherapy practice;
3. Independently conduct safe, effective and adaptable clinical assessments using hypothetico-deductive reasoning to problem solve and support diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and management planning;
4. Demonstrate effective manual and exercise-based interventions by planning treatment, prioritising clinical problems, applying evidence, evaluating outcomes and appropriately incorporating interprofessional roles; and
5. Reflect on cultural safety, communication practices, and personal bias in physiotherapy, with specific attention to working respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1.
